Donor Spotlight – Harry Potter: Wizards Unite

We’re excited to announce our collaboration with Niantic, Inc. during International Games Week at Libraries to integrate special real-world activations in the augmented reality (AR) mobile game, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite™.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is an augmented reality (AR) real-world mobile game co-published and co-developed by Niantic, Inc. and WB Games under the Portkey Games label. As recruits of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, players have been investigating the chaotic magical activity that is leaking into the Muggle world and to solve the mystery of the Calamity. Players can explore their real-world neighbourhoods and cities to discover mysterious artifacts, cast spells, encounter fantastic beasts and iconic characters along the way.

In celebration of International Games Week at Libraries, players may have the opportunity to encounter iconic characters, including Hermione, Luna, and Neville. These characters will appear more frequently at various libraries around the world from November 3rd to November 9th.

Gather your friends and head out to your local library to help contain the Calamity! Share your achievements along the way using #WizardsUnite on social, and make sure to follow along on their official Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram channels for the latest updates.

Thanks to Niantic, Inc. and WB Games for providing another great game to IGW 2019!

  1. How are you determining which libraries will participate? I love that you’re doing this and would love to promote it at my library!

    1. We don’t have a list of spawn points. We are going to include a question on our after-event survey for people to ask to be included as a spawn point. We’ll send this to Niantic but we can’t guarantee they’ll add points. Having the data is a good first step towards that goal.

  2. This games glitches so much it became a source of constant frustration for me. When it glitched during the event and didn’t unlock my portkeys I received unhelpful and then bordering on rude replies from their help desk. As their glitcheans I can never complete the game I figured it was time to stop playing. Nice that they’re bringing people to libraries – hope that it benefits them at least!

  3. Please allow Yuen Long Public Library in Hong Kong included as well! Many many thanks!! There are so many players in Hong Kong, please let us enjoy this activity!

  4. How do I know if there will be increased spawns around my library? Is there some list of libraries or it just need to be marked in Google Map or OSM?

    1. Yes, it should include some libraries outside of the US. We don’t have a list of spawn points so the best way to check it to visit your library and try out the app.

  5. Please add some of the libraries in Charlottesville, Virginia! We have multiple libraries here, but the nearest one that appears to be participating is almost an hour away, and with most of this event taking place during a work week, especially with Election Day right in the beginning, that’s too far for me to go.

    1. If your local library already had spawn points you can go see if they are respawning more frequently regardless of their participation in IGW. Next year, feel free to approach your local library about hosting an event for IGW.

  6. So, the events are designed almost only for the USA because people from the rest of the world doesn’t matter.

    1. We welcome representatives from other countries to help with sponsorships/donations and events. Please contact us at gamert@ala.org if you would like to work with us to increase participation in your country. Thanks!
